Gloucester at Beverly : Salem Evening News Game Story (2/10/00)
Four third-period goals power resilient Panthers
Hockey - Beverly 4, Gloucester 2
By PHIL STACEY (Sports editor)
SALEM -- Don't bury the Beverly High hockey team's postseason chances
just yet. With just 15 minutes standing between them and the end of their
state tournament dreams, the Panthers finally found a way to shake their
goal-scoring blues, connecting four times over the final 12 minutes to
stun Gloucester, 4-2, before a wildly enthusiastic crowd at Salem State's
Rockett Arena. This wasn't just Beverly's first win over Gloucester in
eight years -- it was a victory that saved their season. And it couldn't
have come at a better time. Junior center Josh Karp's shorthanded goal
-- coming with his team on a 5-on-3 man-down situation -- got the flame
ignited with 11:35 to play. From there, his teammates carried the torch
as Justin Galui tied it with 6:50 to go, freshman Tim Gentile gave the
Panthers the lead with 5:08 remaining, and senior Corey Harrington iced
it with an empty-netter with 5.6 seconds left. "That third period was all
about heart," said Beverly coach Mike Deering, whose team finally won its
first game of the 21st century after beginning the new year a horrendous
0-7-2. "We needed something to get us going offensively, and Josh's goal
was just the thing. It really lifted our spirits and gave us the confidence
that we could score. We finally started converting on our chances." The
Panthers had scored just six goals in their last seven games combined,
but came through last night when it counted most. Now, at 5-8-3 overall
(4-6-3 NEC), they need seven out of a possible eight points in their final
four contests to qualify for postseason play for the third straight year.
They play at Peabody Saturday, vs. Lynn English Monday, at Triton Tuesday
and at Hamilton-Wenham next Saturday. Beverly junior goaltender Travis
Tobin made a strong case for earning All-League honors, coming up with
a big 25-save effort. Twice he made spectacular diving saves to knock away
what seemed like a sure Gloucester goal; once stacking the pads to thwart
Dave Demetri eight minutes in; and again six minutes into the third, this
time with his glove off of Peter Couture's rebound put-back attempt. Gloucester
(9-7) had a chance to seal its eighth straight postseason berth with a
victory, and seemed well on its way after Mike Palazzola's power play goal
in the first period and Matt Borowski's stuff-in midway through the second
gave the visitors a 2-0 lead after two periods. "All we had to do was keep
moving our feet and keep putting pressure on them," lamented Gloucester
coach Jack Alexander. "I have no idea why we stopped doing that. We had
them, but gave them a chance to get back into it. When that happened, they
took full advantage of it." The Fishermen need just two points in their
last four games to make the postseason, but it won't be easy. Their remaining
schedule consists of Danvers, Revere, Lynnfield and Matignon, four teams
that have combined for almost 50 wins this winter. Things didn't look good
for the Panthers when they took three consecutive penalties early in the
final period. With Gloucester holding a two-man advantage, a goal by the
visitors would have sealed the Panthers' fate. Karp, however, wouldn't
let that happen. Forechecking aggressively at the point, he stole the puck
from Gloucester defenseman Seth Muise, broke down the wing and beat goaltender
Jason Malaquias (22 saves) with a wrist shot through the 5-hole. His team-leading
14th goal of the season cut the deficit to 2-1. "That might have been the
biggest goal we've scored all season," said Deering. "It seemed to wake
us up and gave us the life we needed to come back and win." Smart, aggressive
forechecking led to Beverly's next three goals as well. Galui, the senior
co-captain who played his best game in over a month, knotted things at
2-2 when he collected a blocked shot out front in the slot and calmly ripped
a snapshot over Malaquias' glove shoulder from 25 feet out. Tim Gentile
then put his team over the hump, taking a pass from his brother Lou from
behind the net and lifting a backhand over Malaquias. "He couldn't have
picked a better time to score his biggest goal," said Deering. Harrington,
another player who stepped up his game immeasurably, capped off Beverly's
remarkable comeback when an attempted Gloucester clearing pass hit him
in front of the Gloucester goal and trickled in. Deering and his players
realize that this win far from secures a postseason berth. In fact, it
will require four more efforts identical to last night's to get the Panthers
into the dance. "Forget about taking it game-by-game. We've got to take
it shift-by-shift," Deering said. "Peabody is going to be very difficult;
that's all we can be worrying about right now. But at least we've got our
confidence back. "If Travis can play goal like he did tonight, if the forwards
forecheck and are smart and the defense does its job, then we've got a
shot."
