Recap : (by Mike Gastonguay; sportsWIRE Editor)
The great part of college hockey and sports in general is that any given
team can win on any given day. Hockey East's championship weekend gave
proof to that statement. Semi-Final Friday saw two upsets with Maine dominating
#1 seed Boston University and the defending champion BC Eagles sliding
past a tough UNH team. BC fans hoped for a Hockey East 3-Peat while Maine
fans wanted their first divisional title in seven years. If penalties were
points, this game would be 10-10 after the first period but the first ended
0-0. BC goalie, Scott Clemmensen, kept the Eagles' net empty throughout
the first, except for when his own mask crossed the goal line when it was
knocked off his head early in the game. The second period was similar to
the first. The Eagles' defense stayed solid while Maine's defensive-awareness
began to dwindle which game BC many scoring opportunities. BC tried to
capatalize on these chances but luckily for the Orono faithful, A Maine
stick blade would reach the puck just in time to dump it out of their defensive
zone. Forty minutes were played without score but that would change as
Maine was the first to find the back of the net in the third. Cory LaRose
scored the unassisted goal which gave Maine the mental-edge over the Eagles
for a majority of the third period. The back-and-forth battle continued
until the final mintue of regulation when after two timeouts, Bobby Allen
scored a goal that Blackbears goalie, Matt Yeats, could not stop. BC players
and fans rejoiced over the goal and hoped to come out strong in ovetime
but Maine prevented a fourth period from existing by scoring with under
three seconds remaining. Niko Dimitrakos was the game hero by scoring five
seconds after sportsWIRE associate, Jon Glidden, said that Maine could
and would score before the completion of regulation time. Maine won the
game, the Hockey East championship, and the notched their second consecutive
upset; a feat they can only match once for the remainder of the season.
